Huijsen Red Card Costs Real Madrid as Atletico Win Derby, Rise to Second

Atletico Madrid beat 10-man Real Madrid 2-1 in the first Madrid derby of the season, with Dean Huijsen's second-half red card proving decisive as Atletico moved above their rivals into second place in La Liga.

The game was goalless and tense until early in the second half, when Huijsen dragged back Giuliano Simeone inside the box. The referee initially booked the defender for the resulting penalty but upgraded it to a straight red after a VAR review. Alejandro Grimaldo converted the spot-kick, and Jonathan David doubled the lead six minutes later. Antonio Rudiger pulled one back for Real with a header in the 89th minute, but Atletico held on through a nervy finale.

The result leaves Atletico second, five points behind leaders Barcelona, while Real Madrid drop to third, a point further back, having now lost twice this season. Huijsen will serve a one-match suspension and miss Real's next LaLiga fixture as a result of the red card.
