Stones was withdrawn in the 62nd minute and replaced by Benjamin Pavard. Scans confirmed a muscle strain to the flexor muscles in his left thigh, with some reports suggesting he could be sidelined for up to a month.

The timing is unfortunate for Thomas Tuchel, who is preparing his first England squad since the World Cup, with the Three Lions due to face Spain at Wembley on 26 September before a Nations League schedule follows.
