Lazio Come From Behind to Beat Cagliari 2-1 and Go Top of Serie A With Club-Best Start
Lazio beat Cagliari 2-1 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Sunday, November 1, to go top of Serie A. They came from a goal down. The win took them to 28 points from 10 games. That is nine wins and one draw, and it is the best start to a league season in the club's history.
Cagliari made the better start. M'Bala Nzola put the visitors ahead in the 20th minute. Lazio needed some time to respond. Gustav Isaksen levelled the score in the 36th minute with a precise strike. The game then stayed at 1-1 for a long spell.
The winner came late. Andrea Pinamonti came off the bench in the 55th minute. He scored in the 83rd minute to make it 2-1. It was the fifth time this season that Lazio have won a league game by a single goal.
Cagliari were reduced to ten men in stoppage time. Adam Obert had been booked in the 76th minute for a foul. He was shown a second yellow card in the 91st minute for another foul on Isaksen.
The result was Lazio's sixth league win in a row. It also moved them three points clear of Inter. Inter had started the weekend level with Lazio on points. They then lost 3-1 to AC Milan in the derby on Saturday. Inter now have 25 points. Roma are third with 24 points, and Como are fourth with 23. The top four teams are separated by only five points.
Lazio are now alone at the top of the table for the first time in 16 years. Only one team has collected more points from the first ten games in Serie A. That was Rudi Garcia's Roma in 2013-14, who won all of their first ten league matches.
Coach Gennaro Gattuso kept his feet on the ground after the game. "Our target is to avoid relegation and we still need 12 more points," he said. He added that the team needs to keep working and not look at the table. Lazio last won Serie A in 2000.
Cagliari stay 11th with 13 points.
