Lyon Beat Angers 2-0 With Goals From Nuamah and Tolisso to Return to Third in Ligue 1

Lyon beat Angers 2-0 at the Groupama Stadium on Sunday, November 1, in a Ligue 1 Matchday 9 game. Ernest Nuamah scored in the 38th minute. Captain Corentin Tolisso added a second in the 86th minute with a header. The win ended a two-game losing run and took Lyon into third place.

Lyon dominated from the start. They had 64 per cent of the ball and took 21 shots, five of them on target. Angers managed eight shots and two on target. Lyon thought they had a penalty in the 13th minute for a challenge by Jordan Lefort on Zachary Athekame. The penalty was awarded, but VAR overturned it.

Angers had a good moment of their own. Prosper Peter hit the post in the 34th minute. Lyon then took the lead. Tolisso set up Nuamah, who finished with his right foot past former Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes. It was a well-worked goal and it gave Lyon a 1-0 half-time lead.

Nuamah had a day to remember. He turned 23 on the day of the match. He also started as a centre-forward for the first time. The goal was his fourth in Ligue 1 this season, a new personal best in the French top flight. It took his total to six goals in all competitions for Lyon.

Angers tried to fight back, but Lyon put the game away late on. Tolisso rose to head in a corner in the 86th minute. Felix Bacher set up the goal. Tolisso was involved in both goals and was named Player of the Match by FotMob.

The win came after Lyon lost 2-0 away to PSG in their previous league game. Lyon now have 17 points from nine games, with five wins, two draws and two defeats. They are third. They sit three points behind leaders PSG, who have 20 points, and one behind second-placed Lille, who have 18.

Angers stay 15th with eight points. They have won two, drawn two and lost five games.

The result came amid reports that coach Paulo Fonseca could leave the club and return to Portugal.
