Athletic Club Beat Real Sociedad 2-1 in the Basque Derby as Iñaki Williams Scores Again
Athletic Club beat Real Sociedad 2-1 in the Basque derby at San Mamés on Sunday, November 1, in a LaLiga Matchday 11 game. Iñaki Williams scored the opening goal in the 14th minute. Álex Berenguer scored the winner from the penalty spot just before half-time. It was Athletic's third win in a row in all competitions.
Athletic started quickly. Berenguer had a big chance in the opening minutes, but he put it wide from inside the area. The home side took the lead soon after. Nico Williams played a defence-splitting ball over the top for his brother Iñaki. The Athletic captain lifted the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper Álex Remiro, despite a recovery attempt by Mamadou Sarr. Iñaki Williams has now scored again in this fixture, and the goal added to his strong record against Sociedad.
Athletic nearly added a second goal moments later. Iñaki Williams played a ball into the box, but Berenguer could not connect. Sociedad then came back into the match. Luka Sucic scored the equaliser in the 30th minute.
The game was settled in first-half stoppage time. Athletic won a penalty, and Berenguer made up for his early miss. He scored in the 45th minute plus two to make it 2-1. That was enough to win the match.
The final numbers showed how the game went. Sociedad had 62 per cent of the ball against 38 per cent for Athletic. Shots were close at 14 to 13 in Sociedad's favour. Athletic took the points anyway.
The win has a good record behind it. Athletic came into the match unbeaten in their previous five home league games against Sociedad. They had won four and drawn one. That run is now six games. Edin Terzić's side had also won two games in a row before the derby, including a win over Getafe.
Athletic now have 15 points. Sociedad stay on 19 points with six wins, one draw and four defeats from 11 games.
