FC Twente Thrash Ten-Man Excelsior 9-0 as Wout Weghorst Scores Four

FC Twente beat Excelsior 9-0 in Rotterdam on Sunday, November 1, in the Eredivisie. Wout Weghorst scored four goals. The result is the biggest Eredivisie win in Twente's history. It is also the heaviest defeat Excelsior have ever suffered.

The match changed early. Excelsior forward Nesto Groen was sent off in the fifth minute. He received a straight red card for a high challenge that caught Robin Propper on the shoulder. Excelsior played almost the whole game with ten men.

Twente made the most of it. Weghorst opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a header. He scored again after about half an hour. The striker finished off a fine move through the team himself. Twente were 5-0 up at half-time. Weghorst completed a first-half hat-trick before the break, and Daan Rots was also among the scorers.

The second half brought four more goals. Jordy Bawuah scored. Weghorst got his fourth from the penalty spot after the hour mark, which made it 7-0. Ramiz Zerrouki also scored from the spot. Daan Rots then added the ninth goal. He scored twice in the game.

Norwegian Sondre Ørjasæter was the other star. He set up five goals. He is the first player in the Eredivisie this century to register five assists in one match.

Dutch great Rafael van der Vaart was impressed by what he saw. He said some of Weghorst's goals looked like Bergkamp and Van Basten goals. He added that seeing a 9-0 score in the Eredivisie made him a little sad. He said Weghorst was the player he enjoyed watching most.

Weghorst is a former Burnley and Manchester United striker. His four goals here made him the main story of the weekend in the Netherlands.

Twente are now fourth in the Eredivisie with 23 points from 11 games. Excelsior have 11 points. Twente are coached by John van den Brom.
