The silver is a first for Indian badminton. Patri is the first Indian woman to win a singles medal in the sport at the Youth Olympics. Two Indian men won silver before her. HS Prannoy did it at the inaugural Games in Singapore in 2010. Lakshya Sen followed at Buenos Aires 2018.

The final was a close fight. Patri took the opening game 21-14. Zhang hit back to force a decider. Patri trailed 10-19 in that last game. She then saved five match points. Zhang's big-match experience told in the end.

Patri's path to the final was historic in itself. A quarter-final win on 4 November made her the first Indian woman to reach a Youth Olympics badminton semi-final. A hard-fought semi-final win over Watanabe then guaranteed a medal and put her in the final.

This is India's fourth medal at Dakar 2026. The table below shows every India medal so far.
