Martinez Hat-Trick Fires Tottenham Women to 6-1 Win at Bristol City in Players Cup

Tottenham Hotspur Women beat Bristol City Women 6-1 in the Subway Players Cup on Wednesday evening, October 28. Shekiera Martinez scored a hat-trick as Spurs ran out comfortable winners against a side who play in the second tier, the WSL2.

Bristol City started brightly, and Spurs looked short of confidence in the opening minutes. That did not last long. Once Spurs settled, they took control of the match. They were 3-0 up inside 24 minutes. Holdt scored from close range after a neat passing move, with Eveliina Summanen squaring the ball across the box. Martinez then finished from the right side after a Matilda Nilden shot had been saved.

Signe Gaupset made it four with a fine goal, lobbing Bristol City goalkeeper Brzykcy from distance. Bristol pulled one back almost straight away. Rio Hardy scored from close range after Spurs failed to clear a ball played in from the left. It was the first goal Spurs had conceded in the Players Cup this season outside of a penalty shootout. Spurs led 4-1 at half-time.

The visitors pushed on again after the break. Four minutes after the restart, Matilda Nilden ran onto a through ball from Holdt and fired low into the corner. It was her first goal for the club. Martinez then completed her treble to make it 6-1.

There was also a welcome moment for Spurs off the scoreboard. Jess Naz made her first appearance in almost 11 months. She had ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament in December last year, and her return to the pitch was one of the major talking points of the evening.

The win is another strong result for Spurs in this season's competition. Bristol City, who sit fourth in WSL2, had no answer once Spurs got going. Spurs' performance was a clear step up from their opening minutes, when the hosts had looked the more confident side.
