Bayern Beat Magdeburg 6-1 to Reach German Cup Last 16 as Olise Scores Twice

Bayern Munich beat second-division Magdeburg 6-1 at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night, October 28, to reach the last 16 of the German Cup. Michael Olise scored twice, and the hosts pulled clear in the second half after a closer first 45 minutes than the final score suggests.

Bayern were still without head coach Vincent Kompany, so assistant Aaron Danks was in charge for the cup tie. The hosts started quickly. In the 10th minute, Lennart Karl played a through ball to Ismael Saibari, who passed across for Olise to tap in the opener.

Magdeburg hit back within five minutes. Mateusz Zukowski let fly from outside the box, and his shot took a deflection off Hiroki Ito on its way past Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig. Bayern did not stay level for long. Around six minutes later, Saibari was set up by Olise and chipped the ball over Magdeburg goalkeeper Dominik Reimann to restore the lead. The visitors kept going and hit the post just before the break, but Bayern went in 2-1 ahead.

The second half was a different story. Bayern scored four unanswered goals after the restart. Olise added his second from the penalty spot. Alphonso Davies and Nathaniel Brown also scored. The final goal came on the last play of the game, when young forward David Santos Daiber fired in a well-placed shot for 6-1. It was a goal on his Bayern debut.

Harry Kane, who won the Ballon d'Or in London on Monday, was an unused substitute and did not play at all. Bayern's bench was full of younger names, and Daiber's late strike gave the night a memorable finish.

The win came on a day when Bayern also had good news off the pitch. Sporting director Max Eberl confirmed before kickoff that Kompany had been discharged from hospital. Danks will remain in charge for the next league match, a home game against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. Bayern and Dortmund are level on points at the top of the Bundesliga, with Bayern ahead on goal difference.
