Bayern Coach Vincent Kompany Discharged From Hospital, No Return Date Set
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital, the club confirmed on Wednesday, October 28. Sporting director Max Eberl gave the news in an interview with German broadcaster ARD before Bayern's German Cup tie against Magdeburg. No date has been set for Kompany's return to work.
Kompany, 40, was taken to hospital last Friday after he collapsed at the club's training ground. He had been watching Bayern's second team train at the time. He had been fighting a virus in the days before and had missed some team sessions. Even so, he had stayed on the touchline for Bayern's Champions League match against Arsenal before he collapsed.
Eberl said doctors had diagnosed meningeal irritation. Kompany will now continue his recovery at home. The club says the focus is on rest and medication. Eberl called the discharge fantastic news and said it showed Kompany's condition is stable.
There is still no timeline for a return to the dugout. Bayern said on Saturday that his absence would last weeks, not days. Eberl made clear that the decision rests with the doctors. He said Kompany would be given all the time he needs and would return once he is fully recovered and says he is ready. The club does not want to take any risks with his health.
Assistant coach Aaron Danks has taken charge of the team in the meantime. He led Bayern to a 3-1 win at Freiburg on Sunday. On Wednesday night, Bayern beat Magdeburg 6-1 at the Allianz Arena to reach the last 16 of the German Cup. Danks has also stressed that Kompany will resume his duties only when he gets medical clearance.
Danks will be on the touchline again on Saturday, when Bayern host Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker. Bayern are top of the Bundesliga on goal difference, level on points with Dortmund. Earlier this week, Harry Kane revealed after his Ballon d'Or win that Kompany had phoned him that morning to wish him luck.
