Everton Beat Newcastle 3-1 to Reach Carabao Cup Quarter-Finals With Grealish Left Out for Disciplinary Breach
Everton beat Newcastle United 3-1 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday night, October 29, to reach the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. They did it without on-loan winger Jack Grealish, who was left out of the squad for what the club called a breach of club discipline. Goals from James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry sent David Moyes' side through to a last-eight tie at Fleetwood Town.
Newcastle made the brighter start. Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had to make a save early on, and Will Osula was denied by a last-ditch challenge from James Tarkowski just before the half-hour mark. Then Everton struck. In the 34th minute, Tyrique George pressed Amar Dedic and forced a loose ball. Hackney helped it on to James Garner, who curled a fine first-time shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Everton doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time with a sharp counter-attack. Pickford started the move, and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall drove forward before Barry crossed for Hayden Hackney. He guided the ball home in the 45th minute for his first goal for the club.
Newcastle brought on Yoane Wissa, Joelinton and Anthony Elanga at the break, but Everton stayed in control. In the 69th minute, Garner released Dewsbury-Hall, whose low cutback found Thierno Barry inside the area. The striker took one touch and fired home to make it 3-0. Dan Burn headed in an Elanga cross in the closing minutes for a consolation goal.
The off-field story was the absence of Grealish. Everton confirmed before kick-off that he had been dropped for a breach of club discipline. It was widely reported that he had missed a training session. Grealish, who is on loan from Manchester City, also missed Everton's 2-0 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday, which the club had put down to illness. Moyes would not give details after the game. He said it was a club decision and that he supported it.
The result lifts Everton after back-to-back league defeats to Chelsea and Arsenal, in which they failed to score. The club has not won a major trophy since the 1995 FA Cup. Their quarter-final opponents, League Two side Fleetwood, knocked out Arsenal in the previous round. Everton and Newcastle will meet again in the Premier League in five days.
